Cyber4Kids. Do we connect to public WiFi or not? (ep.7)

We will not call it "addiction" to the Internet, but the reality is that it would be increasingly difficult for us to conceive our lives only offline. And children seem to be even more anchored than us in the virtual environment, 2 out of 3 feeling disturbed when they can not access the Internet, according to statistics provided by the EU Kids Online Romania 2018 study. In these conditions, we should not be surprised that free public WiFi can become so attractive to children, despite the cybersecurity risks involved.

That's why the latest episode of the Cyber4Kids by certSIGN cyber education campaign addresses the issue of accessing public WiFi networks, with helpful tips for kids (and parents) for a secure online connection:

Important to remember?

• The child must understand the differences between a private WiFi at home (paid, secure, which can only be accessed by you), a WiFi in public places such as museums, parks, restaurants, shops, airports or hotels (open for anyone who knows the password – when/if it exists – and not as secure) and mobile data (connection for phones, tablets, paid and limited, which can generate additional costs).

• An open access WiFi network can be, in fact, a malicious hotspot set up by a cybercriminal in a public place, called “Public WiFi” or after a cafe, a store or the headquarters of a nearby company.

• When connecting to a public WiFi, careful Internet browsing is recommended – without installing applications, accessing unknown websites and links (links should always start with https and have a closed padlock in front) or entering personal data in websites.

• Attackers can trick the little ones into downloading malware when they connect to public WiFi, the danger of malicious programs (viruses, computer worms, spyware, adware, Trojans) ranging from infecting devices, stealing personal information to viewing files stored on the devices.
