certSIGN and Babeș-Bolyai University demonstrated live, during the Unchain Festival, a benchmark event for fintech and blockchain in Central and Eastern Europe, a complete use case of the European Digital Identity Wallet (EUDIW) in an academic environment. The demonstration, carried out using the EUDI Wallet Sandbox developed by certSIGN, took place in front of an international audience from over 20 countries.
The scenario covered the entire flow: issuing a student ID directly into the EUDIW and using it to obtain and store, in the digital identity wallet, the access permit for the “Lucian Blaga” Central University Library in Cluj-Napoca.
certSIGN’s EUDI Wallet Sandbox is a complete, functional, and ready-to-operate infrastructure that includes digital identity issuance, issuance and verification of electronic attribute attestations, advanced authentication, and qualified electronic signature in accordance with the requirements of the updated version of the eIDAS Regulation.
This implementation marks the beginning of a broader pilot program dedicated to integrating European digital identity into the educational and administrative services of UBB. Future developments aim at using the EUDI Wallet for authentication in the university’s AcademicInfo platform, accessing campus resources based on identity attributes stored in the wallet, and accessing other public services.
The demonstrated model is based on a simple principle: one institution issues electronic attestations of identity attributes, while another accepts them directly from the EUDI Wallet. This trust model will similarly apply to processes in other sectors such as banking and financial services, telecommunications, or utilities.
“The project represents a first step toward integrating digital identity in a secure and efficient way into our students’ everyday experience and simplifying access to university services. We are exploring the expansion of this model to other services beyond the university, for the direct benefit of our students,” said Prof. Dr. Daniel David, Rector of Babeș-Bolyai University.
“The integration carried out together with Babeș-Bolyai University confirms that we have the technical infrastructure necessary to implement the EUDI Wallet and that it operates in accordance with European standards. Beyond technical validation, this pilot project shows how digital identity can become a concrete and practical tool both for individual users, who will manage their identity attributes and data in a secure, simple, and transparent way, and for the institutions they interact with,” said Aurel Meiroșu, Business Development Director, certSIGN.
To demonstrate compliance with standards and ensure interoperability in heterogeneous environments, the functionalities of certSIGN’s Sandbox are validated through interoperability tests with organizations in the European digital identity ecosystem, including tests organized by the Cloud Signature Consortium (CSC) in Bucharest in March 2026 and those within the Moldova Digital Summit 2026.
