Mobile security – what we have learned in 2018, what can we expect in 2019?

In their efforts to protect their organizations, cyber security teams face multiple obstacles. Companies have to defend more and more people, areas and functions, which amplifies the cybersecurity challenges.

According to Cisco's 2018 Cyber Security Report, the most demanding areas and functions are mobile devices, cloud public data and user behavior.

The Cisco 2018 Security Capabilities Benchmark study provides information on current security practices and compares these results with those of 2017, 2016 and 2015. The research involved more than 3,600 respondents from 26 countries.

What have we learned in 2018 and what can we expect in 2019?

Cyber security specialists at Avast have pointed out in the Avast Threat Landscape Report: 2019 Predictions that 2018 has been distinguished – in terms of mobile device security – by an increase in cyber attacks through fake applications and banking trojans.

Thus, the Avast report – centered on Android – highlights mobile malware threats with aggressive ads (up 49%) and fake apps (up 24%).

Also, the return of bankers Trojans was particularly pronounced on the mobile side (150% increase, compared to 2017-2018), from 3 to over 7 percent of global detections. Although it may not seem a major shift in overall volume, specialists believe that cyber criminals see bankers as a safer source of money than cryptomining attacks.

What to expect in 2019? According to Avast, "classic" tactics will remain – ads, phishing, and fake applications will continue to dominate the sphere of cyberrisks related to mobile devices.
